You should have prepared and prioritized your evacuation list, put it inside a pillowcase, and stored them under your bed.


A significant storm has been pounding your area for the past six hours. You have just heard on the radio that your neighborhood has been given 10 minutes to evacuate.


  1. Set a timer to 10 minutes.

  2. Get your evacuation list and pillowcase from under your bed. Gather your possessions.

  3. When the timer goes off, immediately stop the gathering of your items.

  4. NEVER try to gather more items than the time you have been given allows.

  5. ALWAYS remember that your life, and the lives of your loved ones, matter more than any possession.


  1. At the conclusion of the 10 minutes, discuss:

    • What have we learned?

    • What do we wish we had gathered that we did not? Do we need to move the wished for items up on our list?

  2. Put the list and pillowcase back under your bed.

  3. Write on your calendar when you will practice the 5-, 15-, and 30-minute evacuation drills.
